Colomane. 8th March 2009.
Despite the absence of the All-Ireland, the Colomane meeting was quite successful. The rain, sleet and hailstones held off for the time necessary to run the races.
Congrats to Deirdre Goggin on her 'jockey of the day' award and bto for Scoot's Mischief. Well done to John Healy for breaking his duck and to Kieran Sheehy
on his successful return to road racing.
- Grade A (John & Chrissie Buckley Memorial Cup) - 1. S. O'Reilly/K. Santry's Frisco Titan (K. Sheehy), 2/5 fav; 2. Shanahan/Whelton/Hayes's Driven
Storm (T. O'Leary), 5/2; 3. T. Doyle's Kelly's Hero (Noreen McSweeney), 4/1. 3 ran, 6l, 8l.
- Frisco easily won this -- no surprise. A super horse, but he needs rivals of his own calibre.
- Grade B (Diarmuid & Kathleen Dineen Perpetual Cup) - 1. C. Hannan's Oakview Flash (Deirdre Goggin), 4/1; 2. B. Newman's Casimir Fabio (Noreen
McSweeney), 5/2; 3. J. Shanahan's Hilton Genius (T. O'Leary), 6/4 fav. 5 ran, 8l, 2l. 4th, Home Ambrose, 4/1
- Flash led from the start. Genius left his challenge late but came off stride in the closing stages. He passed the post like that but kept his placing because the
next home was so far back. Ambrose was a little unsettled after the midway turn but will strip fitter for this. Just For Joe was pulled up around the first turn.
- Golden Mile (Peter Cronin Perpetual Cup) - 1. Dunmanway Racing Club's CP's Fantasy (J. Healy), 6/4; 2. M. & M. Goggin's Scoot's Mischief (Deirdre
Goggin), 5/2; 3. Mary Forbes/Noreen McSweeney's The Punisher (P. Forbes), 5/1. 6 ran, 2l, 1L. 4th, Duggan's Diplomat. NR: Mack's Direct
- Punisher led them off but coming into view, Mischief was in front. CP came with a late run, showing more of his true talent.
- Grade C (Bantry Plant Hire Perpetual Cup) - 1. Deasy/Hurley/Keohane's On The Run (J. McSweeney), 2/1; 2. J. McCarthy's Bytheway (Deirdre
Goggin), 4/5 fav; 3. P. O'Brien's Frisco Lady (Owner), 6/1. 5 ran, 10l, 8l. 4th, Bonkerstotallynuts
- They started out, and when they came to the first turn, Vyrnwy David was in front, followed by Bonkers. David did not turn, Bonkers followed him, and so
did Bytheway for a couple of lengths. Run turned perfectly, followed by Lady. Bytheway then turned, and eventually, Bonkers. Run was in the ascendancy
from there on, while Bytheway could not close down the distance.
- Grade D (Denis F. Crowley Memorial Cup) - 1. B. Newman's Swift Harrier (Deirdre Goggin), 2/1 fav; 2. R. Sugrue's The Blue Finch (M. Fleming), 6/1;
3. P. Hill's Hillside Dream (E. Kane), 4/1. 7 ran, 6l, 7l. 4th, Do The Business, 4/1
- Biz led them in from the start outside. He led them out, too, after the first turn, but it looks as if Harrier took over before the next turn. Finch was hot in
pursuit, but Harrier proved too strong.
- Grade E (Joe O'Sullivan Acorn Life Cup) - 1. J. Shanahan's Lakeview Security (D. McCarthy), 6/4; 2. G. Carey's The Biscuit (J. McSweeney), 5/4 fav;
3. G. & J. O'Sullivan's Yvonne's Princess (M. Fleming), 3/1. 7 ran, 8l, 2l. 4th, Silver Cam, 5/1. NR Cam's Lily
- Security and Biscuit tussled for the lead in the early stages. Biscuit prevailed but Security was only waiting to pounce on the straight for home.
- Novice (Michael Keohane Perpetual Cup) - 1. B. Barry's Supreme Hall (J. McSweeney), 2/5 fav; 2. J. Hurley's Hilton Sprinter (Deirdre Goggin), 5/2; 3.
P. Forbes's I'm Perfect (Owner), 6/1. 4 ran, 7l, 10l. 4th, Mack's Flash
- Sprinter was in command until Hall got serious on the run-in.
