Castlehaven. March 1st 2009.
An eventful day. Neither jockey nor horse were hurt in the incident after the Novice, which turned out to be not as serious as it looked. Unrelated to this race, two
jockeys were stood down for the day, having been deemed guilty of dangerous riding - again, in two separate races. Derry McCarthy had a lucky escape in a
slip-up caused by interference -- we hope he won't be too stiff and sore in the morning. John McSweeney, jockey of the day, had yet another treble -- well done
-- and Tim O'Leary scored a double, with Deirdre Goggin winning the remaining race.
- Grade A (Rob Hawk Cup) - 1. Breda Shanahan's Dream's Place (T. O'Leary), 1/2 fav; 2. Cahirtown Racing's Dilly's Dragon (J. McSweeney), 2/1; 3.
Shanahan/Whelton/Hayes's Driven Storm (D. McCarthy), 4/1. 4 ran, 10, 12l. 4th, Kelly's Hero, 6/1. NR: Coalford James, Hilltop Tuck
- Dream came with his usual late run to reel in erstwhile leader, Dilly's Dragon, who looked to be running out of steam. Storm ran well, and never lost gait.
- Grade B (Michael O'Mahony Memorial Cup) - 1. B. Newman's Casimir Fabio (J. McSweeney), 6/4; 2. D. O'Reilly's Dragon's Glory (M. O'Reilly),
1/1fav; 3. M. & M. Goggin's Scoot's Mischief (Deirdre Goggin), 6/1. 5 ran, 2l, nk. 4th Joe Moorsley, 6/1 NR Frisco Titan, Oakview Flash
- Scoot led for most. At the business end, Dragon made his move and so did Fabio. A good finish, with the winner one to watch.
- Grade C (Eileen Burchill Memorial Cup) - 1. P. O'Driscoll's Vyrnwy David (J. McSweeney), 3/1; 2. W. J. Cooke's Just For Joe (D. McCarthy), 3/1;
3. C. Hannan's Blatantly Pride (Deirdre Goggin), 5/1. 6 ran, 3l, 2l. 4th Matty O, 1/3 fav.
- David led from the start. Frisco Lady was in early contention and so was Matty O. But that bold boy changed his mind half-way through the first turn and
lost a lot of ground. At the business end, Joe got serious but could not reel in the winner. A decent run from Blatantly Pride.
- Grade D (David Brickley Memorial Cup) - 1. B. Newman's Swift Harrier (Deirdre Goggin), 6/1; 2. M. Herlihy's Do The Business (P. O'Brien), 2/1; 3.
G. McCarthy/M. Hurley's Duggan's Diplomat (M. Fleming), 6/1. 8 ran, 8l, 1/2l. 4th The Punisher, 6/1. NR Ebony Jane
- Biz held sway until the last turn where I think he was briefly headed by Diplomat. After rounding that, Harrier pounced and quickened for an easy win.
- Grade E (Padraig Burke Cup) - 1. D. Shanahan's Cam's Lily (T. O'Leary), 6/1; 2. G. & M. O'Sullivan's Yvonne's Princess (M. Fleming), 4/1; 3. P.
Hill's Hillside Dream (Emma Kane), 3/1. 9 ran, 4l, 5l. 4th The Biscuit, 4/5 fav.
- Poll Topper was first away and seemed to be travelling well until severe interference blew her out of it. Lily was first into view heading for home and
extended her lead. The Biscuit never seemed to get into it.
- Novice (John Sheehy Memorial Cup) - 1. B. Barry's Supreme Hall (J. McSweeney), 1/2 fav; 2. F. Hurley/S. Crowley's One Cool Dude (M. O'Reilly),
6/4; 3. J. O'Donovan's Cam Andy (Owner), 3/1. 4 ran, nk. hd. 4th Mack's Flash, 4/1
- Hall, for one of her talent, seemed to make hard work of this, but it was her first road race. Andy was first after the turn, yielded to Dude but both were
caught in the closing stages by the winner.
