Goleen. 10th February 2008.
- Not the best day's racing, I'm afraid. And poor attendance, too, in the spectacular setting. Full marks, though, to Noreen McSweeney on her four-timer and
to Tim O'Leary on his double. Most interesting at Goleen was the display of the magnificent cup won in the Thyestes at Gowran Park. John O'Donoghue,
half owner of winner, Preist's Leap, was there on a sadder occasion. He was presenting the cup, in the Grade D, in memoryof the twins, Anne O'Donoghue
and Breda O'Driscoll, to the winner of the Grade D (Kelly's Hero). Onward to Dunmanway, where it is likely there will be a few new entrants.
- Grade A (O'Meara's Bar Cup)- J. Mycock's Fidlin (Noreen McSweeney), 1/6 fav; 2. Deasy/Hurley/Keohane's Newtown Commander (T. O'Leary), 4/1;
3. M. Herlihy's Do The Business (P. Hill), 4/1. Oreanna, 4th. 4 ran, 8l, 10l.
- Newtown Commander ran his heart out and led until the run-in. But Fidlin was only waiting to pounce. Oreanna looked in with a chance but she flattened
before the last turn.
- Grade B (Lobster Pot Cup) - 1. Shanley Racing's Magical Mancini (T. O'Leary), 1/6 fav; 2. C. O'Sullivan's Joe Moorsley(D. McCarthy), 5/1; 3. Margie
McSweeney's Home At Last (J. McSweeney),2/1. 3 ran, 7l,2l. NR: Mack's Direct
- Joe Moorsley ran well in this (a step down). He was in charge until turning for home when Magical Mancini began racing in earnest.
-
- Grade C (Fastnet Bar Cup) - 1. J. Shanahan's Hilton's Genius (Noreen McSweeney), 1/3 fav; 2. W. J. Cooke's Meadowbranch Jake (Deirdre Goggin),
4/1; M. Brickley's Goldfella (D. McCarthy), 6/4. 8 ran, 1 1/2l, 3l.
- Hilton's Genius appeared to have more to do here. He was waited with while first The Punisher and then Goldfella set the pace. Heading for home, Genius
had got closer and took it up from Goldfella. But Jake was in touch throughout but at the business end, could not close.
- Grade D (Twins - Anne O'Donoghue & Breda O'Driscoll Memorial Trophy) - 1. T. Doyle's Kelly's Hero (T. O'Leary), 5/2; 2. J. O'Mahony's Glan Teifi
(Noreen McSweeney), 1/2 fav; 3. R. Sugrue's The Blue Finch (J. McSweeney), 6/1. 7 ran, 6l, 7l.
- Current Supreme and The Blue Finch vied for the lead until they headed for the second (and last) turn. Kelly's Hero went into that and came out of it first.
Glan Teifi then challenged, almost got on terms but had to give best.
- Grade E (Alec Hamilton Memorial Cup) - 1. Caroline McGrath's Posh Paddy (Noreen McSweeney), 4/1; 2. B. Newman's Swift Harrier (D. McCarthy),
5/2; 3. P. Hill's Hillside Security (P. Hill),3/1. 6 ran, 1/2l, 1L. NR: Ebony Jane
- Posh Paddy led from the start, followed by Hillside Security. Swift Harrier made his serious challenge on the straight for home. He got close but switched to
the outside of Paddy in the closing stages. A stewards' enquiry was called to determine any interference by the winner, but the results stood. Favourite,
Perfect Red, never got into the hunt and finished 4th.
- Novice - 1. Rayger Syndicate's Cam Rayger (Noreen McSweeney), 1/2 fav; 2. N. Forbes's Silver Cam (M. Duggan), 5/1; 3. Deirdre Goggin's Teadies
Best (Owner), 6/4. 3 ran, 8l, 15l.
- A messy race, but the winner showed his class. He broke after the first turn, which Teadies Best did not take. Rayger went in pursuit of Silver Cam while
Teadies Best took his time getting back into things. Rayger joined issue with Silver Cam heading for the final turn and in the closing stages, proved stronger.
