Colomane. 13th January 2008.
- A pleasant day out, in which only Novice and the Grade E provided any sort of a surprise. Still, the marquee names continue to impress and to outclass
their rivals. Jockey of the day, Noreen McSweeney achieved a four-timer - her first, and Tim O'Leary earned a treble - his first. Well done, both. Magical
Mancini, thanks to the ministrations of Anina Tanno, won "best-turned-out."
- Grade A (John & Chrissie Buckley Memorial Cup) - 1. J. Mycock's Fidlin (Noreen McSweeney), 1/4 fav; 2. H. Bennett's Coalford James (Deirdre
Goggin), 8/1; 3. J. Manning's Briwyns Best Scoot (J. McSweeney), 5/2. 6 ran, 8l, 10l.
- Scoot and James battled it out throughout most. Fidlin was waited with until the business end. But I don't think he gave his supporters any worries.
- Grade B (Diarmuid & Kathleen Dineen Perpetual Cup) - 1. Shanley Racing's Magical Mancini (T. O'Leary), 1/3 fav; 2. Margie McSweeney's Home At
Last (J. McSweeney), 5/2; 3. M. Herlihy's Do The Business (P. Hill), 4/1. 6 ran, 15l,1 1/2l.
- Here's another winner who did not cause any nail-biting among his backers. He kept in touch, but did not look to be in any hurry. Frisco Lady got a good
turn at half-way, which landed her in third behind Goldfella and Home At Last. But again, on the straight for home, Mancini took it up and quickened to win
as he liked.
- Golden Mile (Peter Cronin Perpetual Cup) - Deasy/Hurley/Keohane's Newtown Commander (T. O'Leary), 4/1; 2. J. Burchill/D. O'Donoghue's The Blue
Fox (J. McSweeney), 5/4; 3. T. O'Reilly's Cole's Decision (Deirdre Goggin), 6/1. 4 ran, 2l,1L NR: Mister Hill. Driven Storm, 4/5 fav. p.u. at half-way.
- Driven Storm led to the turn where just after, he slipped up. He did no favours to the Fox but Commander was not affected and came home to a
well-deserved win. The Fox did well to get back into things for runner-up.
- Grade C (Bantry Plant Hire Perpetual Cup) - 1. James Shanahan's Hilton Genius (Noreen McSweeney), 1/2 fav; 2. W. J. Cooke's Meadowbranch Jake
(A. Sweeney), 6/4; Dunmanway Racing Club's I'mdoubletrouble (D. McCarthy), 4/1. 5 ran, 8l, 5l.
- The winner here did cause some heart-stopping among his supporters. They started out, and Jake was first as they came into view. Buddy reached the turn
in front and let them out of it. Here, Genius nearly came to grief but recovered and set off after the rest. His class and speed told, and he seemed to have
had no difficulty making up the ground.
- Grade D (Denis F. Crowley Memorial Cup) - J. O'Mahony's Glan Teifi (Noreen McSweeney), 4/5 fav; 2. J. O'Callaghan's Lee Dale Star (J. Sheehy),
6/1; 3. T. Doyle's Kelly's Hero (T. O'Leary), 4/1. 10 ran, 3/4l, 2l.
- Again, they started out (the country). JR reached the turn first followed by Glan Teifi, who rounded smartly to take it up. Kelly's Hero broke after this turn.
On the straight for home, Lee Dale Star challenged strongly but Teifi had enough in hand to fend him off.
- Grade E (Joe O'Sullivan Acorn Life Perpetual Cup) - 1. Shanley Racing's Perfect Red (T. O'Leary),2/1; 2. Caroline McGrath's Posh Paddy (Noreen
McSweeney), 4/1; 3. A. Hamilton's Ebony Jane (M. Duggan), 3/1. 6 ran, 1 1/2l, 1L. NR Nana Moon. Hillside Security, 1/1 fav. was 4th
- Chance Security broke at the start while Posh Paddy set the pace. Hillside Security and Ebony Jane were in close pursuit, but the latter broke at the turn.
Paddy looked like the winner but Perfect Red came with a nicely timed successful drive.
- Novice (Michael Keohane Perpetual Cup) - 1. Rayger Syndicate's Cam Rayger (Noreen McSweeney),3/1; 2. Deirdre Goggin's Teadies Best (Owner),
4/5 fav; 3. C. O'Regan's Whiskey Echo (T. O'Leary), 3/1. 6 ran, 10l, 8l
- Rayger was first away but Teadies Best soon took charge. Heading for home, Rayger regained the lead and impressed with his big margin win. One to
watch for the future.
