Clonakilty Show - June 8th 2008

As is usual at shows, the races started late, it being almost impossible to judge how long classes will go on. The usual loyal followers stayed on to watch. It looked like the two young jockeys who were unseated were just shaken up.

Topper was first to show, but Buachaill soon took over. Biscuit tried hard throughout to close but couldn't reel in the winner, who looks a star in the making.

Also Ran: The Orient Express (F.Quill Jnr) SPs: 2/5 fav, 4/1, 6/1 Dist: 2l, 3l.

This was a re-run, as around halfway, Cole's Decision slipped up. The re-run was put off for a while and the distance was reduced. This did not seem to make any difference to Boy, who was leading in the first (half) race, and who led from the start in the re-run. Brywins Charvis looked threatening for a while, and Sable took her time about getting going.

SPs: 4/5 fav, 4/1, 4/1 Dist: 1 1/4 l, 6l.

Hillside Dream, 3/1, passed the post in 2nd but was disq. because of the driver's failure to wear the mandatory body protecter. Baron led them off but just before half-way, Dream took charge. Quail moved closer as they headed into the last lap. Halfway through that, he went to the front, as composed and spry as a horse half his age.

SPs: 1/2 fav, 6/4, 5/1 Dist: 1/2l, 3l.

Mr. Hill was first to show. He gave a slight skip on the back straight for the first time. Shortly after, Tom arrived to take it up. Going into the second (of four) laps, Dream made his move, and on the back straight for the second time, almost got on terms with Tom. They continued like that, with Tom looking like he had to work harder than usual. Mischief made no real impression but got third when Mr. Hill broke badly heading for the last bend.

Also Ran: Coalford Jet (J.O'Reilly) SPs: 5/4, 4/5 fav, 4/1 Dist: 1l, 6l.

As they were going down to the start, Ambrose unseated his jockey and there was a slight delay, until a new rider was found for him. (Ambrose was allowed to race as he did not fall.)

Jet was in command until halfway round the second (of four) when Quest challenged. Jet did not give up but had to yield to Ambrose halfway through the third. Ambrose could not get on terms and Flash seemed to leave his challenge late. A very good performance for a girl who was having only her third race under rules and her first on a pacer.
