Rosscarbery. March 11th 2007.

It was a pity that rain spoiled play and the efforts of the organising committee. There were good entries in most, and in some cases, it was a case of "horses for courses." No real mouth-dropping performances. But Vyrnwy David impressed on his seasonal debut, and there were a couple of hard-luck stories.

Race 1. Novice. 600 Euro.

Also Ran: Darkie (P.O'Brien) -- S.P. 4/1, 1/2 Fav, 4/1. Dist.: 3l, 4l.

I did not see the beginning of this, but Ebony Jane finished strongly, while Nana Moon filled the bridesmaid slot again.

Race 2. Grade B. 900 Euro.

Start Time: 14.50 -- Race Time: 4.23

Also Ran: Coalford Cobra (T.O'Leary), I'm Double Trouble (M.Duggan), Oreanna (D.Goggin), Travis (P.O'Brien) -- S.P. 1/2 Fav, 6/1, 6/1, 3/1. Dist.: 1/2l, 6l, 1/2l.

Goldfella was prominent throughout most. Getting serious, Home At Last moved into second. Here, Do The Business looked as if he would do just that, but Home At Last rallied. A disappointing enough performance from Just Flash, which was newly downgraded.

Race 3. Golden Mile (B-C-D, Non 1st PW) - 800 Euro

Start Time: 15.05 -- Race Time: 1.53

3 horses ran -- S.P. 1/2 Fav, 5/2, 5/2. Dist.: 10l, 12l.

This wasn't much of a race. Coalford Connection was due a win but then, so is Mack's Direct.

Race 4. Grade D. 700 Euro.

Start Time: 15.20 -- Race Time: 2.06

Also Ran: Castleross Flyer (P.O'Brien), Tina's Dream  (J.Sheehy) -- S.P. 5/1, 4/1, 4/5 Fav, 4/1. Dist.: 7l, dead heat..

The winner showed his class here. At first, it seemed to be between Jesse James and Staly Princed. Jesse James turned wide at the first, giving the old stager the advantage. He held on to that but could find no answer to the winner's late challenge. Lee Dale Star left his move a little late.

Race 5. Grade E. 600 Euro.

Start Time: 15.40 -- Race Time: 2.07

4 horses ran -- S.P. 1/4 Fav, 6/1, 4/1 . Dist.: 7l, 10l.

Red Cam looked to be back to his best here, while the runner-up should visit the winner's enclosure before the season's end.

Race 6. Grade C. 750 Euro.

Start Time: 15.55 -- Race Time: 2.09

Also Ran: Create Gold (M.Duggan), Dilly's Oasis (J.McSweeney), Direct Rocket (N.McSweeney), Lakeside Gold (P.Hill) -- S.P. 2/1, 6/1, 4/1, 4/5 Fav. Dist.: 1 1/2l, 4l.

One of the hard-luck stories: on the run-in, Shuttle Buddy had just reeled in Frisco Lady. In the dying strides, he gave a skip, from which Frisco Lady gained advantage. Still, she had to be in the position to do so. Commander Matt came from nowhere to fill the frame.

Race 7. Grade A 'Causeway Classic' - 1,200 Euro

Start Time: 16.15 -- Race Time: 4.13

Also Ran: Casey B (P.Hill), Coalford James (M.Duggan) -- S.P. Evens fav, 5/1, 2/1, 6/1. Dist.: 1 1/2l, 6l

He's The Man led them off, followed by Newtown Commander. The latter turned the first poorly, while Hilltop Tuck, as a result of some jostling, had to turn it twice. The winner led them into half-way, and stayed in front. Coalford James looked threatening in the early stages but it was He's The Man who dogged Coalford Victory. Hilltop Tuck made up a tremendous amount of ground to finish third.
