Central Track. May 6th 2007.
This was a good day's racing, with plenty of surprises. A pity about the drizzle, but it stopped about two-thirds of the way through. A good atmosphere, with lots
of our Dub friends, and Jason Kane's commentary was good. We also saw a couple of exciting beginners, and one intriguing newcomer. Read on!
- Laddie From Leap Saddle Derby- 1.J. Mycock's Fidlin (M. O'Reilly), 6/4 fav; 2. S. Cronin/D. Daly's Home Ambrose (S. Quill), 3/1; 3. D. Ross's Cult
Direct (J. Healy), 6/1. 6 ran, 10l, 8l.
- Meadowbranch Jake led them off and stayed in front until going into the last lap in the 1.25 mile event. He stayed there until 2 from home when Home
Ambrose took it up. But Fidlin right away threw down his challenge and went to the front. Cult Direct headed Home Ambrose again, but the latter fought
back. Stubby's Fool broke early on and would not settle. When he did, momentarily, he showed tremendous speed
- Class 020/080 - 1. T. Murphy's Coalford Victory (Owner), 5/2; 2. T. Doyle's Zidane (J. Smith), 3/1; 3. Quill Bros's Stoneriggs Wizard (D. Murphy), 6/1.
9 ran, 1 1/2l, 3l. 2m.07.5secs
- An exciting race. Porterstown Zach was all the rage (1/1) but broke early on. Coalford Victory led until the penultimate bend, when Zidane took it up. On
the run-in, Victory re-entered the fray to good effect. Zach showed tremendous speed to get to second as they headed into the last bend on the first lap, but
was pulled up just before the half-way stage.
- Trotters Only - 1. A. Hamilton's Ebony Jane (Owner), 3/1; 2. J. Foley's Neil Dragon (M. Goggin), 1/1 fav; 3. P. O'Brien/Margaret Melvin's Frisco Lady
(P. O'Brien), 6/4. 4 ran, 7l, 8l. 2m.42secs
- Ebony Jane led from the start and never put a foot wrong. Frisco Lady broke shortly after the start and was unsettled again heading into the last circuit. The
local trotters were maidens, and newcomers, Reuben Launcher and Neil Dragon performed creditably, as they were 80 and 90 yards, respectively, off the
gate.
- Class 010/019 - 1. W. Burton's Papa Joe (W. McInerney), 4/1; 2. P. Hill's Hillside Dream (P. Hill), 3/1; 3. Quill Bros's Sable Decision (D. Murphy), 6/1.
9 ran, 8l, 3l. 2m.07secs
- Papa Joe impressed as he led from the start. Stoneriggs UK contended briefly early on but it was Hillside Dream who gave chase to the winner but could
not prevail. Sable Decision came out of nowhere, as she can do, to fill the frame, while 4/5 favourite, Mister Hill, made no impression.
- Class 000/009 - 1. S. Buckley's Red Cam (R. Shanahan), 6/4 jf; 2. M. Healy's Southlands Merlin (Owner), 4/1; 3. Windmill Racing Syndicate's Coalford
Cobra (Amy O'Reilly), 5/1. 7 ran, 5l, 4l. 2m.09secs
- Coalford Cobra was the first to show but Southlands Merlin soon took it up. Red Cam followed and went to the front as they approached the back straight
for the last time. Red Cam won easily, while his co-favourite, What A Man, did not feature. Springhill Kate was unruly and not allowed to start.
- Novice/Improver/Intermediate - 1. S. O'Reilly's Newtown Perdition (Amy O'Reilly), 6/1; 2. W. McInerney's Shannonside (Owner), 4/1; 3. A. Russell's
Spanko's Boy (Owner), 4/5 fav. 8 ran, 1/2l, 1 1/2l. 2m.09secs
- Spanko's Boy looked the winner as he led until 2 from home. Then Shannonside cruised clear and he looked the winner until Newtown Perdition, always
handy, collared him on the line. Full marks, too, to a good performance from Meadowbranch Katie, 4th, from off the back, in the hands of her novice
driver. Note: This race was put back, as in the original, Stan The Man bolted before the start and it took some time for him to slow himself down.
- Maiden/Novice - 1. Shanahan Bros's The March Hare (R. Shanahan), 3/1; 2. Kelleher Bros's All Inn (M. Kelleher), 1/1 fav; 3.W. McKittrick's Marian
Hall (P.Kane Jnr), 3/1. 7 ran, 1/2l, 1/2l. 2m.10secs
- A good race in which Artefact led until the business end, when The March Hare took it up. Marian Hall was in close touch, and there was something of a
cavalry charge on the run-in. Here, Marian Hall, All Inn and The Punisher (4th) challenged late.
- Maiden - 1. J. Shanahan's Lakeview Security (R. Shanahan), 4/5 fav; 2. J. O'Callaghan's Lee Dale Star (M. Goggin), 6/1; 3. Quill Bros's Harrier's
Decision (D. Murphy), 6/1. 8 ran, 1/2l, 1 1/2l. 2m.12secs
- This race was called off, after they had gone just over a furlong. SugarKane Harrier broke atthe start and there was some other mishaps, nothing really
unusual with maidens.
- All runners lined up again and at the off, Springhill Sunshine and SugarKane Harrier broke. Lakeview Security took early command and stayed in charge.
Lee Dale Star tried hard but could not close; Harrier's Decision had a difficult passage but performed well to fill the frame, while SugarKane Harrier was
fourth.
