Caheragh
August 19th 2007
- This was a good day out. The weather held until the last race, and then it put a stop to what would have been apres-racing socialising. The meeting was, as
usual, very well organised. Someraces threw up a few surprise results, while others showed the favourites sharpening their teeth for Tregaron.
- West Cork Oil All-Ireland Saddle (Michael Keohane Memorial Cup - 1. Caroline Salter's Disraeli Quest (J. O'Callaghan), 5/2; 2. S. Cronin/D. Daly's
Home Ambrose (J. Reid), 4/5 fav; 3. W. Stewart's Driven Storm (Noreen McSweeney), 7/2; 4. T. Doyle's Zidane (Deirdre Goggin), 6/1. 9 ran, nk, 6l. 5l.
- Disraeli Quest led them off and was never headed. As they sorted themselves out, Zidane came with a promising run. CD Boy broke at this stage. Heading
into the last lap of the 1.25 mile race, Zidane was still giving chase. Driven Storm began his move and got into second behind the leader. Home Ambrose
also began to get closer but may have left his move too late. On the straight, he tried to get on terms but could not peg back the winner. Sable Decision
finished 5th - she got a bad start and it took her a while to get going. But full marks to the winner - a seasoned campaigner, and his beginner jockey, on
what was only his 3rd race under rules.
- Four-Year-Old Sire Stakes (Diarmuid Dineen Memorial Cup) -
- 1. Shanley Racing's Red Armbro (R. Shanahan), 6/4; 2. K. O'Connell's Midnight Mover (Owner), 1/1 fav; 3. P. Hayes's Watch Me Now Boys (P. Hill),
2/1. 3 ran, 5l, 1/2l.
- Red Armbro led from the start. While Watch was a bit uneasy on the going, neither he nor Midnight Mover had no excuses.
- Maidens - 1. C. O'Leary/N. Hurley's The Buachaill (M. Goggin), 6/4; 2. J. Boyle's Glan Clettwr (J. McSweeney),1/1 fav; 3. C & C Syndicate's City
Shock (J. Cross), 5/1. 6 ran, 7l, 8l.
- The Buachaill led from the off, and was followed by Glan Clettwr and City Shock. The only change in the order was when Tom reached third on the
backstraight for the last time, but went off stride. A decent performance by City Shock in her first race.
- Novice - 1. Maura Travers' Robert E. Lee (P. Kane, jr), 2/1; 2. NCG Racing's Hard Times (J. McSweeney), 5/1; 3. F. Hurley/D. O'Reilly's Back In
Business (D. O'Reilly), 3/1. 7 ran, 2 1/2l, 7l.
- Back In Business was first to show, while Sands went off stride. BeautySpot lost gait a few furlongs in and never got back into things. Going into the second
lap, Dylan looked threatening. Robert was only waiting andforged clear at the business end. Hard Times closed down the ground, but not in time.
- Improver/Intermediate (Jim Kingston Memorial Cup) - 1. R. Cleary/W. Jones's Artefact (R. Cleary), 1/2 fav; 2. P. Hill's Hillside Security (P. Hill), 4/1;
3. G. Cooke's Dan The Man (Noreen McSweeney), 5/1. 6 ran, 4l, 1 1/2l.
- Artefact clearly outclassed his rivals here, and was never in any danger from them. Tregaron, here we come.
- Class 000/005 (Donie O'Neill Memorial Cup) - 1. K. Santry's Toys Art Us (S. O'Reilly), 2/1 fav; 2. M & P Hennessy's Little Spike (J. McSweeney), 4/1;
3. L. O'Regan's Brywins Chavis (D. Murphy), 8/1. 10 ran, 1 1/2l, 1/2l.
- Toys Art Us let the others sort it out betweenthemselves. On the straight, when Rebecca's Baron and Little Spike looked to have it between them, Toys
powered up on the outside. Tregaron, look out.
- Class 010-014 (The Committee Cup) - 1. J. Boyle's The Orient Express (J. McSweeney), 4/1; 2. D. Sheridan's Damota's Warrior (S. O'Reilly), 2/1; 3.
M. Brickley's Ayr Strike (Owner), 3/1. 9 ran,7l, 8l.
- The Orient Express got the front early on. That is where he loves to be and when he is there, is seldom denied. Ayr Strike did well to fill the frame while
favourite, Blackfield Scoot, never found daylight.
- Class 016/023 (The Black Forest Cup) - 1. M. Brickley's Stoneriggs Quail (M. Brickley), 8/1; 2. Delaney/Russell's Mister Hill (K.Sheehy), 2/1; 3. B.
Roche's Porterstown Thierry(Owner), 4/5 fav. 9 ran, 1 1/2l,1l.
- Stoneriggs Quail is another that loves the front. He got it and set sail for home. Mister Hill and Thierry engaged in a tussle behind him, rotating the lead until
the grey prevailed.
- Three-Year-Olds - 1. Kelleher/Power's All In (M. Kelleher), 1/4 fav; 2. P. Hill's Hillside Hi-Ho (P. Hill), 5/1; 3. G. Carey's The Biscuit (Owner), 5/1. 7
ran, 1L, 5l.
- All In is another that is heading for Tregaron and he is bound to rattle them. He was an all-the-way winner, with Hillside Hi-Ho impressive in runner-up.
- Jug Of Punch qualifier - 1. Kelleher/Power's Flashdance (M. Kelleher), 1/1 fav; 2. Dunmanway Racing Club's Springfield Chief (P. Manning), 3/1; 3.
Quill Bros's Tom's The Man (D. Murphy), 3/1. 7 ran, 1 1/2l,1/2l.
- Flashdance dropped his local bridesmaid tag. Springfield Chief set a cracking pace and looked set for five-in-a-row. Flashdance made his move heading for
the second-last bend and took it up. Chief did fight back but the winner was not to be denied. The Wizard never got into the hunt.
