ITHRF Statement April 4th 2008

The ITHRF convened a special meeting last night to discuss the current adverse publicity regarding the running of the 2008 Road Trotting Final at Rosscarbery on Sunday next. It was unanimously agreed to ratify the entry of Coalford Victory.

It was the opinion of the meeting that to refuse this entry on the basis of the cancellation of last Sunday’s race meeting would be punitive, anti competition and not in the best interest of racing.

All eight entrants were accepted and paid the required fees on Sunday 23rd March, thereby entering a binding contract.

It was confirmed at the meeting that the controversial “3 runs” was not an official rule as it was neither proposed nor adopted at any ITHRF AGM. It was merely a recommendation in the late 90’s by the acting Executive of the time to provide a framework in the event of the race being over subscribed.

There are a number of precedents regarding this recommendation, the winner of the All Ireland Road Trotting Final in 2000 had two runs prior to contesting the final, and another competitor in this final had one previous run and was a non runner on another occasion prior to contesting the final. There had been four scheduled race meetings that season prior to the running of the final and there would have been ample opportunity for all contestants to have had three runs if required. The 2004 final also had a competitor with only one run prior to contesting the race.

We will not be making any further statements or comment in this regard and would respectfully suggest that users of the message board please refrain from any further damaging comments on the matter.

Many people have contributed generously with their time, effort and money to make it a memorable day, if you can’t make it to Rosscarbery on Sunday you can get the commentary live on C103FM on the afternoon and the race previews on Cork’s Sports Saturday at 11am.
