The Standardbred and Trotting Association of Great Britain and Ireland. THE STANDARDBRED NEWS Issue 13 FEBRUARY / MARCH 2003 Website: www.standardbred.org Stallions can be advertised on STAGBI website for £15 per year other adverts including banners etc are subject to agreement. Don't neglect this effective method of advertising which is available 24 hours everyday, and every day of the year. From the Registrar's desk Another new year - and I hope it will be a happy and successful one for you all. Once more I thank you for your patience over slow processing. With myhealth problems, and the amount of Standardbreds who have to be caught up with, I feel a bit like Sisyphus, who in Greek mythology was condemned to push a large boulder up a hill whereupon it promptly rolled down again and he had to start all over again. His best moments and only respite were as he watched it roll down the hill! Once more I would like to draw your attention as to how things must be done. Please take note and co-operate. As you know, in order to save you cost and keep our fees little more than nominal, most of the work is voluntary, so do your part and make it as easy as possible for us. Some reminders: Membership - becomes due on 1st May. £5 for one year, £25 for six. Send your fee and a STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE to me at Flaxlands Farmhouse. I am sick of addressing envelopes so if you don't send me the SAE I will just update your details and renew your membership, but your membership card, made out in your name, will remain in the drawer of my desk! Also again you can only register or transfer horses if you have paid up so do not wait to be reminded or your paperwork will be held up. It is not my job, or that of the BHRC office to be continually reminding and nursing people. Even if we do regard you all as family it is time the kids grew up. Maureen has written a helpful guide to registration procedures. What I would emphasise is that you MUST include the covering certificate with your application form. Please staple or pin it to the front. If you fail to do this I will not chase you in future but just leave your papers on the bottom of the pile until you contact me! Another reminder about choice of names. We try to give you what you want but the names of living people are 'out of bounds'. Also famous horses in harness racing or any other discipline. If we didn't have some policy Best Mate would be racing Best Mate with maybe Shergar tackling them on the final bend and Red Rum coming up to snatch victory on the line and another Best Mate tailed off. I think this would confuse the punters who would be expecting to see some jumps out there. Transfers of ownership - the owner is responsible under the Rules of Racing until the seller form has been returned either to me or the BHRC office so be prompt about it. The buyer must send the horse's passport for updating with their form together with the required fee which is still £10. It is no use sending the form without the passport. Having had a good moan - and I know I am not perfect either - I should like to thank the vast majority who have shown support and appreciation for all our efforts. Elsewhere Colin will tell you of the plans to DNA all your mares at no extra cost to yourselves. Because we spend so little on admin we are able to devote the income to the aims of the Association. Reminders for Stallion Owners * Every mare that is covered by your stallion should be checked against her registration papers. * If a mare has not had a hair sample sent in to STAGBI for DNA analysis (check against the annual list supplied from STAGBI) then a hair sample should be taken and this should be sent to Breeder Services along with part 2 of the covering certificate. * In each current year a covering certificate should be issued for all broodmares that are covered by your stallion. Non-standardbred broodmares also require a covering certificate. From this year, and in order to comply with the new intended EU legislation, all horses will require registration and the issue of a passport. Covering certificates can be ordered from Breeder Services. Reminders for Mare Owners * When your broodmare is taken to stud remember to take her registration papers with her as the registration details are needed for the service certificate. * Make sure that you receive a covering certificate upon payment of the stud fee in the year that that your broodmare is covered. You will require this in order to register the resultant foal. Reminder for Foal Registration * Take a hair sample from the foal as soon as possible after birth and send it with part 4 of the service certificate to Breeder Services. * To apply for a passport for the foal or yearling have the animal marked up by a vet or other official on a STAGBI registration form and send the application along with part 3 of the service certificate and the appropriate fee either to the BHRC (acting as our agent) if you are a BHRC licence holder, or to the STAGBI registrar if you are not a BHRC licence holder. * To register a horse you must be a member of STAGBI which currently costs £5 per year. Non-members will need to fill in a membership application form and send it along with the membership fee to the STAGBI registrar. For annual renewals you should send your details along with your payment to the STAGBI registrar also enclosing a stamped addressed envelope.
