The STAGBI rules and regulations for artificial insemination used for breeding are as follows:
1. All stallion owners intending to use their stallions as donors for AI purposes must notify STAGBI in writing one month in advance of donating, and register the stallion/s name/s, registration number/s and the stallion/s location.
2. All domestic semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that have been geno-typed by DNA analysis from a hair sample using the micro-satellite technique.
3. All domestic semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that are fully registered and entered into the STAGBI studbook.
4. All domestic stallions donating semen for shipment from their stud farm location (fresh/chilled/frozen) must have a certified negative EVA and CEM status established prior to each breeding season, and the certificate lodged with STAGBI.
5. All domestic frozen semen must be stored at an approved centre, and the location address registered with STAGBI for record purposes.
6. All importers of frozen semen must notify STAGBI one month in advance of their intention to import, and supply the stallions name and location.
7. All imported semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that are fully registered and entered into the studbook of a recognized breed authority in their respective country.
8. *All imported semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that have been geno-typed by DNA analysis using the micro-satellite technique. The certified unique number and DNA profile must be made available to STAGBI to record for progeny verification purposes.
*(This should be determined before making any contractual purchase).
9. All imported frozen semen must be stored at an approved centre, and the location registered with STAGBI for record purposes.
10. It is the responsibility of the importer to ensure that all pre-import health requirements are in place in accordance with current European legislations and standards. Or verify with STAGBI that a reciprocal arrangement is in place with the country of export.
11. The importer must supply STAGBI with copies of all health certificates, purchasing contract and storage address immediately after import
12. All broodmares to be bred by AI procedures from transported semen must be geno-typed by DNA analysis from a hair sample using the micro-satellite technique. This must be applied for in advance of any AI procedures. The appropriate analysis fee must accompany the hair sample.
13. All foals born as a result of AI must be geno-typed by DNA analysis from a hair sample using the micro-satellite technique. The sample should be forwarded to STAGBI within 28 days of foaling. The appropriate analysis fee must accompany the hair sample.
14. On completion of each AI procedure the authorised veterinarian/technician must complete and return all documents required by Stallion owners to enable STAGBI to issue mating certificates. Include where possible confirmation that the broodmare has been scanned in foal.
Published 2001- amended - 2004
DNA Profiling and parental verification is available through STAGBI at the now reduced rate of £25.00 per test. DNA Packs are available on request from STAGBI Administration Office
2004 FOAL REGISTRATIONS
As you know all foals have to be marked up by a vet or recognised authority while they are still with their dam and in any case by the time they are 6 months old. The procedure we have adopted should make this as efficient and economical as possible incorporating the required integrity for both the breeding and racing industry.
Part 4 of the service certificate for all 2004 foals should be returned to STAGBI at Forest Inn, New Radnor, Powys. LD8 2TN along with £10 for each certificate.
You will then be sent a registration pack, which will include a registration form for your vet to mark up the foal, a microchip which the vet will insert in the foal, and the packs for the DNA samples.
DN A Packs and Samples MUST be returned to STAGBI - Forest Inn, in theenvelope provided.
NOTE: As from this years foaling, all Broodmares will be DNA profiled by STAGBI at NO cost to the owner (This does not apply to AI or parental
verification) Owners wishing to have Full DNA parental verification of their foals may do so at the same time at a fee of £25.00. It is hoped that we will be able to do a number of random foals as well and once we have all the broodmares then we may be able to help with the cost of all new progeny DNA
Registrations can be sent to STAGBI, BHRC or IHRC along with the usual fee of £20 for a new passport, the foal's papers can then be processed and its passport produced. This will give the advantage of the microchip inserted at the time of identification and it being a part of the passport and so gives lifetime identification of the horse which will be useful whether a horse enters racing or some other field of activity.
REGISTRATION OF OLDER HORSES
Every horse in the British Isles needs a 'DEFRA compliant passport' before February 2005. If in doubt whether your horse's passport is 'legal' ring the STAGBI office to check.
IMPORTED HORSES
If you buy a horse from abroad you require all shipping and travel documents showing how it arrived in this country. You then need to get the horse identified and marked up on STAGBI registration forms and submit it to the registry office along with its current passport if it has one, (all European horses should have their passport with them when entering the country, other horses will require a passport produced by STAGBI). Ensure that an export certificate has been issued from the Registry of the country from where the horse was imported (the export certificate is sent direct from the Registry of the exporting country to STAGBI as the Registry of Great Britain). Without these procedures the horse cannot be registered with STAGBI.
